By Hussaini Ibrahim Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the livestock sector through closer collaboration with the Federal Government, with both sides pledging to deepen cooperation in dairy production, animal health, leather processing and meat exports. The commitment was made on Friday when the Deputy Governor, Murtala Sule Garo, represented Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in receiving the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, during an official visit to Kano. Speaking during the visit, Garo commended President Bola Tinubu for establishing the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, describing the decision as a major step towards unlocking the sector’s economic potential. He said Kano had aligned with the Federal Government’s initiative by creating a Ministry of Livestock Development to drive reforms and investment in the sector. According to the deputy governor, Kano remains one of Nigeria’s leading livestock and leather processing hubs, adding that stronger collaboration with the Federal Government and private investors would create more employment opportunities, particularly for young people. He disclosed that the state government was working to establish modern abattoirs to maximise the economic value of livestock, especially cattle, and reduce wastage of animal by-products. Garo added that the government was also expanding investments in poultry and fish farming while improving dairy and egg processing across the state. AHR reports that Kano is one of Nigeria’s major commercial centres for livestock trading and leather production, with the sector contributing significantly to employment, food security and the state’s economy. Speaking earlier, the Minister of Livestock Development pledged the Federal Government’s support for Kano’s livestock development initiatives. Maiha said the partnership would focus on livestock development, dairy production, animal health services, pastoral settlement, leather industrialisation and meat export. He commended the Yusuf administration for establishing a Ministry of Livestock Development, promoting leather processing and encouraging peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders. He said the state government would continue to provide adequate funding for education at all levels, with special attention to tertiary institutions. Delivering the keynote lecture, renowned technocrat and entrepreneur, Engr. Umar Buba Bindir, challenged students of Sokoto State University to harness innovation and research as tools for wealth creation and poverty reduction. Engr. Bindir rejected the widespread characterisation of Sokoto as Nigeria’s poorest state, arguing that such a description fails to reflect the state’s abundant human and natural resources. According to him, the poverty narrative will persist unless universities, researchers and policymakers focus on developing practical solutions capable of generating employment and economic prosperity. He urged students to identify Sokoto’s comparative advantages through research and convert their findings into commercially viable enterprises. Highlighting agriculture as one of the state’s strongest economic assets, Engr. Bindir challenged students of soil science and related disciplines to conduct research on the state’s soil composition and recommend crops with the highest productivity and market potential. He maintained that universities are central to economic transformation, noting that leading global institutions drive national development through research and innovation. Using Cambridge University as an example, Engr. Bindir said the institution contributes more than £300 million annually to the United Kingdom’s economy. He stressed that Nigeria possesses far greater natural resources that can be effectively harnessed through research-driven entrepreneurship. He expressed confidence that with the right policies and commitment to innovation, both Sokoto State and Nigeria could transform their economic fortunes. Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University, Prof. Mohammed Bello Yerima, disclosed that the institution is repositioning itself to produce graduates equipped with entrepreneurial skills rather than job seekers alone.
