From improved infrastructure to stronger support for traders, the Kano State Government has introduced what it describes as a new phase of market development aimed at transforming the state’s commercial landscape.
The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Markets, Hon. Abdurrahman Abubakar Gobirawa, said the administration has achieved remarkable progress in upgrading markets and improving conditions for traders across Kano.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday while assessing the administration’s three years in office, Gobirawa said Governor Yusuf has shown unprecedented commitment to the growth of commerce and business activities in the state.
He said the government’s interventions in markets have focused on improving security, sanitation, accessibility, and infrastructure to create a better environment for traders and customers.
Gobirawa highlighted the construction of a new gate at Beirut Market as one of the steps taken to strengthen security and improve access.
He also mentioned the fencing and renovation of Singer Market as part of the ongoing efforts to modernize trading centres.
He explained that several major markets, including Darki, Gezawa, and Yankaba, are also undergoing redevelopment to bring them in line with modern standards.
According to him, the administration has equally prioritized road construction and rehabilitation around commercial areas to ease the movement of goods and support business activities.
The SSA noted that government policies have made it easier for traders and business owners to carry out commercial activities, including accessing services related to business operations.
He further disclosed that the state government is planning the establishment of a modern vegetable market in Kano, designed to meet international standards, while existing market centres in Gyadi-Gyadi and Tarauni are to be upgraded.
Gobirawa said the achievements recorded in the market sector reflect Governor Yusuf’s determination to strengthen Kano’s position as a major commercial centre.
On challenges such as flooding and congestion, he said the government has taken preventive measures through the construction of drainage systems and culverts to improve water flow during the rainy season.
He added that regular sanitation exercises by the Ministry of Environment have helped improve cleanliness and reduce environmental challenges in markets.
The SSA assured traders that the government would continue to maintain a strong partnership with market stakeholders.
He also disclosed that safety inspections are regularly carried out in markets to prevent fire outbreaks, especially during the harmattan period, through checks on electrical installations and compliance with safety measures.
While identifying leadership issues as one of the challenges affecting some markets, Gobirawa said the government remains committed to allowing traders to choose their leaders through a democratic process.
He called on traders and business owners to support the administration’s efforts and continue working towards the growth and prosperity of Kano’s commercial sector.
