By Muhammad Hamisu The Ringo Sport Club – Nigeria (RSCN), under the leadership of its National President, Malam Ahmed Mohammed Sule, has presented the prestigious NASTOCE 2026 Meritorious Award on Dr. Olayiwola Awakan, Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) at the headquarters of the agency in Abuja over the weekend. Speaking on behalf of the Organising Committee of the National Sport Tourism Merit Award (NASTMA) of NASTOCE, Malam Sule, in a statement he made available to The Newsprint, noted that the meritorious award recognizes Dr. Awakan’s outstanding leadership and transformative contributions to the nation’s tourism sector since assuming office in October 2025. He stated that Dr. Awakan has been at the forefront of repositioning Nigeria’s tourism industry through innovation, collaboration, and strategic delivery of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in view of his pedigree as an award-winning journalist, thespian, dramatist, poet and culture enthusiast – decades of experience in media and creative enterprise which he has brought to bear on his current position as the driver of the country’s tourism industry. Malam Sule further stressed that Dr. Awakan has championed an open-door, inclusive leadership style, emphasizing on teamwork and fresh ideas to advance the NTDA’s mandate, and has consistently advocated for strong public-private partnerships because of his believe that the tourism sector could drive the country’s economy if properly managed. Reeling out Dr. Awakan’s notable achievements, the Ringo Sport Club National President said they include; leading the development of an international tourism city initiative, advocating for community-based tourism development to unlock economic opportunities for local communities strengthening Nigeria’s continental leadership as Chairman of the African Travel Commission (ATC), championing digital storytelling platforms and diaspora tourism promotion and fostering inter-agency collaboration and policy alignment to position Nigeria as a competitive global tourism destination among others. Receiving the award, Dr. Awakan noted with gratitude the honour done to him by the Ringo Sport Club, saying that it is a call for him to do more in his efforts at promoting Nigeria’s tourism industry to the global community by ensuring that Nigeria reaches that peak of being the preferred tourism destination in Africa. Dr. Awakan further noted that the support and cooperation he has received from the Nigerian tourism family have been instrumental in his administrative leadership style and achievements in driving the Renewed Hope Agenda through tourism and promised his commitment to collaborate and support the Ringo Sport Club in its sporting activities and the objectives of the National Sports Tourism Conference and Exhibition, NASTOCE of exploring the synergy that exists between sports and tourism which seeks to unlock the socio-economic potential at the intersection of the two sectors. On the forthcoming ringo sport training programme for the Nigerian Service Personnel, NISPRISPORT 2026 scheduled to hold from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th August 2026 in Abuja, while commending the leadership of the Ringo Sport Club for the initiative, Dr. Awakan pledged the full support of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority for the success of the training programme, noting that supporting sports is part of NTDA’s goal of exploring the huge economic benefits and potential that sports tourism has for national economic growth and development. It would be recalled that NASTOCE 2026, themed Leveraging on the Inter-Section of Multi Sectoral MDAs to Promote Sports Tourism in Nigeria, was held on the 12th May 2026. It is instituted to hold annually, with the 2027 edition, second in the series, billed to hold from Tuesday 4th – Wednesday 5th May, 2027. The conference promises to be a landmark event celebrating sustainable excellence and collaboration among stakeholders in Nigeria’s evolving tourism and sports sectors and basically seeks to foster partnerships, showcase products and highlights the economic benefits of sports tourism for national development.

By Muhammad Hamisu Abdullahi The minister of information and national orientation, Alhaji Muhammad Idris Malagi has said that misinformation and disinformation are weapons capable of inflaming tensions, undermining trust, discouraging investment and even threatening national security. The minister spoke in his keynote address at the just concluded Arewa Media Summit held Coronation Hall, Government House Kano on Monday. He said the above reasons had made professional journalisms as less important in the society. Alhaji Malagi told the gathering that enduring strength of journalism lies in its commitment to accuracy, fairness, verification, balance and responsibility. He said credible journalism must continue to distinguish itself from rumour, propaganda and sensationalism. He urged the media to continue to hold government accountable, saying that constitutional responsibility remains indispensable to the nation’s democracy, but adding that accountability was strongest when it was anchored on facts, context and fairness. He described the summit as both timely and significant, saying that the theme of the event, ‘Government-Citizen Accord: Accountability, Responsibility and Ethical Media Practice,’ could not be more appropriate. Alhaji Malagi said the event reminds the participants that democracy functions best when government was accountable to the people, citizens participate responsibly in national development and the media performs its constitutional role with professionalism, fairness and integrity. “These three pillars are not competing interests; they are partners in building a peaceful, prosperous and united Nigeria,” he said. He described the state as commercial hub of the country, stating that it possesses one of the country’s most vibrant media landscapes. He noted: “It has the largest concentration of radio stations in the region, with community radio stations serving millions of listeners daily in Hausa and other indigenous languages.” On President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the minister said, the administration remains firmly committed to upholding press freedom as a fundamental pillar of constitutional democracy. “We recognise that a free, responsible and independent press is indispensable to good governance, transparency and public accountability. “Our commitment is reflected in our continuous engagement with media stakeholders, our determination to foster an enabling environment in which journalists can carry out their professional duties without undue interference and our resolve to deepen constructive dialogue between government and the media,” he said.…

By Nasiru Yusuf Ibrahim Residents of Rimin Auzinawa Quarters in Tudun Yola C, Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State have appealed to the state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf to intervene in a dispute over the alleged illegal closure of a public access road. They warned that the development poses a serious security risk to the community. Speaking to journalists on Monday, counsel to the residents, Barr. Aminu Garba Sabonsara, alleged that a community leader, Magaji Isyaka Mai Hula, unlawfully converted a public access road into private property by erecting a solid gate and restricting residents’ movement. Barr. Sabonsara explained that residents had jointly agreed to install security gates at strategic entry points to address rising insecurity across the North-West. According to him, Mai Hula volunteered to provide one of the gates as part of the community security initiative. He alleged, however, that after installing the gate, Mai Hula replaced the padlock, denied residents access to the road and began claiming ownership of the public right of way. The lawyer said the action has raised security concerns, with residents alleging that unidentified persons are sometimes brought into the area through the restricted entrance during late-night hours. He added that the blockade has hindered free movement, delayed emergency access and heightened security fears within the neighbourhood. Barr. Sabonsara disclosed that the matter was reported to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone One Headquarters, Kano, where both parties reportedly reached an agreement on June 15, 2026. Under the agreement, Mai Hula was said to have undertaken to remove the solid gate and reinstall the original see-through gate between June 16 and June 22. He also agreed to provide the community vigilante with a key, while the gate would remain open from 7:00am to 10:00pm daily. According to the lawyer, Mai Hula failed to comply with the agreement. Instead, he allegedly filed criminal complaints against some community members before a Chief Magistrate Court in Nomansland, claiming that his life had been threatened. Barr. Sabonsara further alleged that despite a court order directing that no resident should be arrested or detained while police investigations were ongoing, one of the residents, Ibrahim Lawal Musa, was arrested and detained by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).…
